|It turns out the city famous for its coffee is also brewing up sustainable small businesses. Here are three community-conscious ones to check out:

- Riding a green path. Alchemy Goods upcycles discarded bicycle inner tubes, vinyl billboards, and other materials into stylish bags, wallets, and accessories. By partnering with over 550 US bike shops, 425,000+ tubes have been saved from landfills since 2004.
- Creating a sustainable buzz. Big Dipper Wax Works makes all-natural handcrafted candles using only 100% beeswax to help support the sustainable industry of beekeeping. The company also donates 10% of its net profits to other beekeeping organizations.
- Sewn with compassion. Refugee Artisan Initiative is a non-profit organization helping refugee and immigrant women who arrive in Washington State by matching them with companies seeking handmade and sewn goods. The initiative also sells its own line of ethically manufactured jewelry, clothing, and accessories via its retail brand, Mimi Globe Goods.
